Chaplaincy and Spiritual Life
St. Timothy's School is the Diocesan School for Girls in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. Although we are committed to our students understanding the Episcopal tradition and faith, we are also dedicated to education about other faith traditions. Throughout the year, a variety of faith leaders are invited to guide the school in worship. Meditations, student performances, prayers, and readings from sacred texts of the world's religions are an important component of the St. Timothy’s experience. Students and faculty are encouraged to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the role of religion in culture and to be informed and act upon a sense of personal obligation to family, community, and the world.
Chapel is held each Wednesday before lunch in the Katharine B. Wilson Chapel, which serves as a gathering place and a focal point of community life. The services are planned to acknowledge and support individuals from all backgrounds: people of different faith traditions from around the world, those who are searching for spiritual meaning, people who have no explicit religious conviction, and Christians from all denominations.
As an Episcopal school, we celebrate the Eucharist twice a month. Students are involved in all aspects of worship: offering meditations, singing in the choir, serving as acolytes, and reading lessons and prayers. We have an active student vestry, whose members work closely with the Chaplain throughout the year to plan weekly and special services of different faiths.
Intellectual freedom and religious understanding define any vital and diverse academic community. We honor other faith traditions at St. Timothy’s. Quaker, Roman Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu services are just some of the other services that are offered as a part of our weekly meetings together. These services provide students the opportunity to continue to worship in their own tradition and also to learn about the experiences of other faiths.
