Varsity Volleyball defeats GCS in overtime

On Tuesday, St. Timothy's School traveled to Ellicott City to take on the Dragons of Glenelg Country School. This was St. Tim's first match in a week. 

The first set started off strongly for St. Tim's who came out focused and energetic after the long bus ride. The set was always close, but St. Tim's managed to pull ahead 20-13 after freshman Madonna Akabunno served 5 in a row. St. Tim's kept the lead and was able to win the first set 25-18.

St. Tim's went into the second set ready to win. The set was also close, but junior Bri Rider was able to take St. Tim's to a 21-14 lead after serving 4 in a row. Glenelg fought back and was able to bring the score to 22-24, but St. Tim's was able to break the final serve and win the set 25-22.

St. Tim's had a rocky start to the third set, allowing Glenelg to take a 10-7 lead. St. Tim's fought back to take a lead 19-7, but then they allowed Glenelg to serve 3 in a row to bring the score to 20-19. Fierce rallies ensued, but unfortunately St. Tim's was not able to regain the lead. They lost the third set 22-25.

Reinvigorated, St. Tim's hoped to close out the fourth set and win the match, but Glenelg had other ideas. The game was neck and neck until Glenelg's captain served 5 in a row to give them a 22-17 lead. St. Tim's could not get the momentum to move in their favor, and so Glenelg won the fourth set 25-18. 

Glenelg won the coin toss and the game moved to overtime. St. Tim's chose to move back to its starting side. St. Tim's forced a turnover on Glenelg's first server, giving themselves a 1-0 lead. Akabuno served four in a row to bring the lead to 5-0. Again, St. Tim's forced a turnover on the first serve putting the score to 6-1. Sophomore Ari Crewe brought the score to 8-1. St. Tim's gave up a serve to Glenelg before breaking the serve and forcing a side out. The score was now 11-3 with Rider to serve. Rider served 3 in a row to bring the score to 14-3 - match point. Glenelg's captain was back to serve and brought the score to 9-14 before St. Tim's was able to close out the match with a 15-9 win in the fifth set. 

St. Tim's will play their next league match on Thursday at 5:30 at home versus league opponents, the Obezags of Key School.
