Why St. Timothy's?

Why a Boarding School?

St. Timothy’s School is a remarkable community with a small gathering of diverse people in a gorgeous setting, with professed values that are transcendent and our greatest strength. Our commitment to single-sex education, boarding school life and an Episcopal identity with the shape-of-the-future International Baccalaureate Diploma curriculum allows St. Timothy’s School to provide the very best education that is available today.
As a boarding school with day students, we transform lives, and that transformation happens in person, by encounter, and through relationships. True education requires an intentional community that is devoted to the development of the heart, mind, body and spirit. The deeper the relationships that exist, the deeper the education becomes. At this stage of development, teenagers almost intuitively reach out beyond their immediate families (however strong and loving) to their peers and to other adults for guidance and safety. The genius of a place like St. Timothy’s School is that it is designed to deliberately foster these relationships and to make use of and maximize their naturally cantilevering effects – at just the time in life young people need it most.
We are a seven-day-a-week boarding school, with activities and programs for students every day – an important characteristic because each year we enroll students from more than fifteen states and numerous countries. For these girls, St. Timothy’s becomes “home” while school is in session. All aspects of the curriculum at St. Timothy’s, including our honor code, grow out of and are enhanced by our life together.
Campus life, by which our residential program is most often referred, is a high priority for the school. Our Dean of Students, form deans, faculty, and student prefects spend much time thinking about how best to lead the students in their houses.  We refer to our residential units as houses instead of dorms or halls, because we believe it conveys an important message about the role that these units play in the mission of our school – it is home.

Great traditional boarding schools like St. Timothy’s are for outstanding students whose families seek opportunities for them that go far beyond what is available in a day school. We prepare students to take full advantage of the finest colleges and universities and instill in them a desire to make the world a better place.
Boarding school education provides students with a living group that is genuinely diverse and inclusive reflecting the world beyond our campus.  Since students here come from many different backgrounds, their cultural diversity enriches everyone on campus.
The communal experience of being at St. Timothy’s School, even as a day student, is life-enhancing and life-changing. A St. Timothy’s School education is not simply about what happens in the classrooms. The bonds that are made at here are in part due to the strong sense of trust in each other and the conviction that we know our values and can state them clearly. There is authenticity at the heart of this institution.
