Varsity Volleyball loses Championship Match

Friends School 3, St. Timothy's School 1
25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23
On Saturday, October 26, St. Timothy's Varsity Volleyball faced off against Friends School of Baltimore in the IAAM C Conference Championship. Friends was the runner-up during the 2018 season and finished in 2nd place this season. St. Timothy's had not been to the championship since their win in 2014 and finished this season in the 4th place seed.

The game started out slowly for St. Timothy's with the girls looking visibly nervous. Friends took an early 6-2 lead. St. Tim's battled back, but despite improved focus, they could not bridge the gap in the score, and they lost the first set 25-23.

In the second set, St. Tim's looked like a new team. The took an early 11-7 lead. Sophomore Ariyanna Crewe served 8 in a row to increase St. Tim's lead to 18-11. St. Tim's used that momentum to win the second set 25-18.

Back on their home side, the nerves seemed to return to St. Tim's. Despite an early 8-4 lead, St. Tim's allowed Friends' libero to serve 7 points in a row to take the lead 11-8. St. Tim's continued to struggle after that on serve receive. They were unable to catch up and lost the third set 25-18.

In the fourth set, St. Tim's and Friends had a close match, still tied at 12-12. After Crewe's service, St. Tim's pulled ahead 18-16. Neck and neck, the battle ensued between both teams, with St. Tim's hoping to force a fifth set. Unfortunately, the official chose to call a double hit on St. Tim's when the score was tied 23-23. The call was not the best, especially considering the official had been letting double hits slide for both sides the entire match. It was clear that he probably wanted to go home and wanted to avoid an additional set. With the loss of momentum for St. Tim's, Friends was able to score the set and match-winning point.

The Friends team was crowned C-Conference Champions and St. Timothy's received the C-Conference runner-up plaque. Although not the end to the season that St. Timothy's wanted, the season was hard-fought and St. Tim's road in the playoffs including knocking out the first seed team. All good things must come to an end, but St. Tim's looks forward hopefully towards next season.
